Where is Kelso's Bull Ring and why is it being lifted ahead of the coronation of King Charles?
Last updated 28th Apr 2023
Part of Kelso's famous cobbled streets is being lifted this lunchtime - to unearth a time capsule last placed there by the late Queen more than 50 years ago.
The box, which is thought to contain old coins and memorabilia, is understood to have first been placed under the Bull Ring in 1901.
The area in question, which looks like a compass and now forms part of the town's taxi rank, can be found opposite the town hall and is said to be where bulls were tethered on market days for farmers to view in centuries gone by.
It is only ever opened when there's a Coronation of a new monarch, when new material is added, and has lain undisturbed since 1962.

Barriers are being set up in the town centre to allow workers from Scottish Borders Council to dig up the road.
The contents of the capsule will then be put on display in the town's main Square this afternoon before being transferred to the window of the Town Hall over the summer.
Kelso Provost Gavin Horsburgh told Greatest Hits Radio: "The contents of the time capsule is rather sketchy, as there are very little records kept of what is actually under the Bull Ring. But it's said to contain memorabilia and coins of the day, along with newspapers etc."
