Police have confirmed a 15-year-old girl has died, after officers were called to an incident at Jedburgh Grammar Campus on Tuesday.

The teenager's death is not believed to be suspicious and a report detailing the circumstances is being submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Yesterday we told how parents' evenings, and other events, planned at the Scottish Borders secondary have been put on hold while the school, which closed early for the day, comes to terms with the tragedy.

Extra support is being offered to pupils, and any parents with concerns about their children are being advised to contact their class or pastoral teacher.

Police were called to Jedburgh Grammar Campus shortly before 3pm on Tuesday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.55pm on Tuesday, November 5th, we were called to a school in the Jedburgh area following concern for a 15-year-old girl.

“Police and ambulance attended, however she was pronounced dead a short time later.

“The death is not believed to be suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

It's being reported the teenager was found in a toilet area but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Local councillor Scott Hamilton posted on social media that his "thoughts and prayers are with all those involved" - and that school staff and the local authority "will look to support all those affected".

Selkirkshire councillor Caroline Cochrane has described the news as "truly devastating", and urged pupils to check on their friends, and each other.

"This is truly devastating for the family and everyone connected with the school campus," she posted. "It will also have a ripple effect in our schools."

But she added: "Support is there across all our Scottish Borders Council schools. Please talk about how you feel. Ask the person next to you today, if they're okay."

In a message to parents, Lesley Munro, Director of Education and Children’s Services at Scottish Borders Council, said: "Following the critical incident at the school (on Tuesday), we want to confirm that supports will be in place (on Wednesday) to wrap around the school community at this difficult time.

"These supports will include education psychologists, trained officers, school staff and partners who will be available for as long as is needed.

"If you have any concerns about your child or children, please do not hesitate to contact school through their class or pastoral teacher or in whatever would be your normal way.

"As I’m sure you understand it is not appropriate to continue with planned events for now and parents evenings planned for this week will be scheduled for a later date."
