A 72-year-old man has suffered serious facial injuries after being assaulted by a gang of youths in Innerleithen.

Police are appealing for information following the unprovoked attack, which left the pensioner needing hospital treatment.

It happened in the town's Hall Street around 7pm on Saturday (June 8th).

The youths involved are believed to be aged between 13 and 16 and were wearing black hoodies.

It's the latest in a series of anti-social behaviour involving teenagers in the area - with one resident saying they were left frightened in their own home after having their door kicked in.

A fence has also been put up around the nearby football ground after a fire was lit in the stand, which was plastered with graffiti.

“Officers have been carrying out door to door and CCTV enquiries to try to identify those involved.

“The park was busy and we are asking anyone in the area at the time to come forward to help us with our enquiries.”

“If you can help then please contact us on 101, quoting incident number 3080 of Saturday, June 8th, 2024, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
