A 32-year-old man caught driving out of the Borders with a stolen mountain bike in the back of his van, shortly before midnight on November the 28th, has been slapped with an overnight curfew.

Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard police waited for the vehicle at Leadburn after receiving a tip-off.

The e-bike - which was valued at £6,000 - had been taken during an earlier break-in at a shop in Innerleithen.

Jamie Stewart, who gave an address in Edinburgh,  previously admitted a reduced charge of reset.

His solicitor, Ed Hulme, said "an associate" who knew his client had a van asked Stewart to transport the item for him - and he did so without asking any questions.

Sheriff Peter Paterson warned Stewart it was a "serious matter", and said he had no doubt he knew what he was doing.

He gave him a Community Payback Order, with 12 months supervision. And ordered Stewart to stay at home between the hours of 7pm to 7am for the next six months, as a direct alternative to custody.
