Wind and rain is expected to batter the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland overnight, as the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto sweeps across our region.

Up to six inches of rain and gusts of up to 60mph are forecast.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow - be prepared - weather warning for wind. It comes into force at 1am on Thursday and remains in place until 9am.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson warns: "These gusts will be strong enough to blow over a few trees, given that they are currently in full leaf."

Hurricane Ernesto ripped through the North Atlantic last week, but has now weakened to a tropical storm after leaving hundreds of thousands of people in Puerto Rico and Bermuda without power.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said: "There is a chance of some disruption, particularly to travel, and particularly dangerous conditions in some coastal areas as well, with the chance of beach material being thrown on to seafronts, and some coastal roads having some trickier conditions."

Meanwhile, Berwick's been placed on flood alert - with the Environment Agency warning high tides and strong winds may cause large waves and spray at the mouth of the River Tweed. High tide's anticipated between 4.45am and 6am.

A spokesperson said: "We are closely monitoring the situation. Please be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous."
