The RNLI is reminding the public not to attempt to outrun the North Sea.

The warning comes after two more people had to be rescued from the Holy Island causeway when their car became trapped by rising tides around 2pm yesterday (Tuesday) - one hour after the last safe crossing time.

The male and female were picked up by Seahouses inshore lifeboat and handed into the care of the Coastguard, who were scrambled to the shore.

It was the second call-out for the team in 20 minutes, after three kayakers got into difficulty in the area, when one of their crafts flooded - but they were picked up by passing boats.

Seahouses RNLI Volunteer Press Officer Ian Clayton said: "After a strangely quiet July, August arrived abruptly with crew pagers bleeping (twice)!

"I understand the kayakers had attempted to empty their flooded craft, without success in the swell. Fortunately, local boats close by, came to their assistance.

"The second incident on the causeway was disappointing, that despite all the publicity, strandings are still happening."

And he added: "We once again urge visitors not to try and cross the causeway once the water reaches it, and to please heed the safe crossing times displayed."

It's not the first strandings on the Holy Island causeway this year, and has prompted renewed calls for barriers to be installed at the Northumberland beauty spot - something many locals object to.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed, none of the kayakers required medical assistance, "apart from being very cold and wet".
