Around 150 bales of hay have been destroyed in two separate fires, less than a fortnight apart, in Stow.

The first took place on land off Earlston Road on Tuesday, March the 5th, when around 60 were destroyed.

And the second happened in a nearby shed in the early hours of Sunday morning (March 17th), around 2.25am.

Police believe the fires were started deliberately and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Detective Constable Louise Begley said: “We believe these two incidents are connected and we are investigating them as wilful fire-raising.

“I am appealing to anyone with any information to come forward by contacting Police Scotland on 101, quoting 0454 of March 17th, 2024 or alternatively reporting via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile, four miles away, a thatched round house at Wooplaw Woods - Britain's first community woodland - was also destroyed.

It's believed to have been set alight between Saturday and Sunday.
