A 37-year-old woman from Hawick has admitted tying a dog lead around the neck of a convicted sex offender and threatening him with violence.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard Toni Cowan called police in the early hours of the morning to ask if the man was a "nonce".

It came on the same day a local newspaper reported that Michael Reid had been found guilty of attempting to communicate indecently with an underage teenage girl.

The 40-year-old, of Ramsay Road, Hawick, encouraged the youngster in a series of messages to carry out a sex act and repeatedly requested she send him naked images of herself.

He was found guilty after a trial of committing the offence at a house in Grieve Avenue, Jedburgh, on September 27th, 2022.

During her phone call to police, Drew Long, prosecuting, said Cowan became "irate" and could be heard making threats to Reid.

When officers arrived at Reid's address, they found Cowan removing an orange dog lead from around his neck.

Cowan, of Hillend Drive, Hawick, pled guilty to charges of assault and threatening or abusive behaviour at the address in the town's Ramsay Road on April 15th this year.

Her solicitor, Ross Dow, said she was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Sheriff Peter Paterson made Cowan the subject of a one-year supervision order, and also banned her from contacting Reid - who himself was made the subject of a supervision order and placed on the Sex Offenders Register - for the next 12 months.
