A 48-year-old man from Hawick found in possession of a modified pair of motorcycle gloves with daggers sewn into the knuckles has avoided a prison sentence.

Selkirk Sheriff Court was told Robert Young had the offensive weapon as part of his hobby, studying the Japanese martial art Ninjutsu.

His solicitor, Stephanie Clinkscale, said her client also had swords which were not seized by police when they visited his home in July.

Young pled guilty to possession of the gloves shortly before his case was due to go to trial today (Thursday).

He also admitted punching a police officer in the stomach and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner during an earlier incident in January.

Ms Clinkscale explained he had been suffering hallucinations as a result of an infection, when he lashed out at his arrest.

Young, who gave an address in Mansfield Road, Hawick, was fined a total of £730 and an order was made to confiscate the gloves.
