It's just a stone's throw from where two previous cannabis farms were unearthed.

Two Albanian men are due to be sentenced in connection with £105,000 worth of plants seized at a former carpet warehouse in Havelock Street last June; while another two men, also from Albania, were jailed following the discovery of a cultivation estimated to be worth up to £771,000 at the former Buccleuch Hotel in nearby Trinity Street.

Police have been seen leaving the town centre property carrying bags of what's believed to be evidence.

According to its website, the Elm - which was renamed The Hawick Hotel following a change of owners three years ago - boasts 16 en-suite guest rooms, in addition to a spacious bar/lounge and formal dining room.

The rear entrance of the property looks onto the Wetherspoon's bar in Bourtree Place.

Police remain standing guard outside this evening. And officers say enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.30am on Tuesday, February 4th, we received a report of a possible cannabis cultivation in the North Bridge Street area of Hawick.

“Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing.”
