Thousands of pounds worth of equipment, fuel and two vehicles have been stolen after thieves raided a council depot in Hawick.

A white Peugeot Partner van - registration NU1 GKK - and a white Ford Transit tipper - registration FH16 EKX - were taken, along with a quantity of small equipment worth around ÂŁ9,000, and 1,000 litres of kerosene.

It happened at the local authority-owned site on Upper Mansfield Road sometime over the weekend, and police are appealing to the public for help to catch the culprits.

The Peugeot van was later found over the border, near Hexam, in Northumberland. The Ford Transit is still to be traced.

Detective Constable Claire White, from Police Scotland, said: “Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone in the area over the weekend who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.

“Likewise, if you have private CCTV or dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation then please call us.”

It's the latest of a series of high-value thefts from businesses in the Borders in recent weeks.

A seven-and-a-half tonne lorry was stolen from a catering business on Bankhead Industrial Estate in Jedburgh last month (May 31st). It was last seen heading south on the A68.

Earlier that month, ÂŁ35,000 worth of tools and vehicles were stolen during a raid on an agricultural engineering business at the side of the A68 in St Boswells.

Among the items taken were a Toyota pick-up, a blue Transit, a 16ft trailer, generators, strimmers and even diesel from tractors.

That came less than a fortnight after thieves stole 23,000 litres of heating oil from a fuel depot just up the road in Newtown St Boswells.
