It's the first of the Border Common Ridings and celebrates both the capture of an English Flag in 1514 by the youth of Hawick, and the ancient custom of riding the marches or boundaries of the common land.

Crowds have turned out in Hawick this morning (Friday) to celebrate the town's annual Common Riding.

Local roofer Euan Robson is leading this year's festivities, after being appointed to the role of Cornet.

The 26-year-old, who is flying the town's flag, is being followed by hundreds of horses and riders - including Scotland rugby star Stuart Hogg.

And well-wishers have lined the streets to show their support.

Stuart Hogg watches on at the Snuffin' event at the Auld Brig.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio after The Drum and Fife Band roused the town this morning, Cornet Robson, who admitted Common Riding Day was "something special", said: "It's a true saying: 'It's better felt than telt'. It's hard to explain what it is, it's that good.

"Everybody's supported well, it's good to see; and the weather does help.

"I've been lucky. The first rideout (to Bonchester Bridge) we got a bit of a soaking, and I wondered then; but it's been good ever since then. So, hopefully it lasts until the end of the weekend."

Euan is supported by his Lass Abigail Tofts, who tied her ribbons to the Banner Blue during a packed ceremony in the town hall night.

Recalling the bussing ceremony, Common Riding chairman John Hogg said: "The singing was good, everyone was dressed up, it was lovely to see.

"Everyone's buzzing for the Common Riding. Euan's done a great job him and his Lass. And whatever he's done, he's brought the sunshine with him."

Hundreds of well-wishers lined the streets to cheer on their Cornet before partying continued up at the Moor.

Hawick historian Ian Landles says the Common Riding is an integral part of Hawick life.

"This is what Hawick is all about," he said, "this is the summit of Hawick's year. And the whole town comes together and it's been glorious weather.

"I don't think it's rained since the Bonchester rideout. We've got an old saying that if you get a wet Bonchester you get a good Common Riding, but that has excelled itself this year. It's been great."

And he added: "Euan's been a wonderful Cornet, and he deserves all the good things that come his way."
