A court's been hearing how a 25-year-old man was caught with cannabis with a potential street value of £1,750 after police stopped a car seen being driven erratically on the A7, between Selkirk and Hawick.

Jack Purves - who was a passenger in the vehicle - has pled guilty to being in possession of 6.3oz of the Class B drug with intent to supply on May the 16th this year.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard the self-employed fencer - who gave an address at Silverbuthall Road in Hawick - had grown the cannabis from a plant to feed his own habit, because it was cheaper and safer.

But Purves accepted he would share the drug with friends "from time to time".

His solicitor, Ed Hulme, said his client's arrest had been a "wake-up call", and he no longer smokes cannabis. He said he now spends his time in the gym and hopes to get back into boxing.

Sheriff Peter Paterson warned Purves supplying drugs of any kind is a "serious matter", which he said he was not prepared to deal with by way of a fine.

He instead deferred sentence until September 11th for background reports.
