There are dramatic scenes in Hawick this morning (Saturday) as armed police swooped on homes neighbouring one of the town's cemeteries.

Fire and ambulance crews were also called out, along with a sniffer dog unit, after the alarm was raised shortly before 6am.

Uniformed officers could be seen surrounding a house in the Fisher Avenue area, which backs onto Wellogate Cemetery, and locals were told to stay indoors.

One said: "Saw two police cars with blue lights at 7am." Another added: "Officers were everywhere." A third said: "Won’t let me out the street!"

In the last few moments (10am), video has emerged of officers appearing to lead a man away from the property.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.55am on Saturday, December 21st, we were called to a report of a concern for a 29-year-old man within a property in the Fisher Avenue area of Hawick.

“Officers attended and he was arrested in connection. There was no risk to the wider public.”
