A 58-year-old man hit a woman on the head with a guitar after she made a comment about his ex-wife, a court has heard

The pair had been drinking at a holiday cottage near Cockburnspath when the incident unfolded on July the 24th.

Simon Rooney, from Whitley Bay, has today (Monday) been fined £500 after he admitted a charge of assault to injury at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

He's also been banned from contacting the complainer - who suffered a bump on her head - for two years.

India McLean, prosecuting, revealed the assault caused the guitar to smash into pieces.

Rooney's solicitor, Ed Hulme, explained they had begun bickering over the choice of music, and he had removed himself to another room.

But when he returned holding the musical instrument, a comment was made and he swung it at her "in the heat of the moment".

In addition to the fine, Rooney has also been ordered to pay a £40 victim surcharge.
