A 38-year-old man caught carrying out a sex act on himself in a crowded Hawick pub has been ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

Gavin Scott - who gave an address at The Kennels, Abbotrule, Bonchester Bridge - previously admitted intentionally exposing his genitals to three females at the Drumlanrig Bar on April the 15th this year.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard the group, who were seated at a table close to the door, were left "upset and distressed" by what they saw.

Alasdair Fay, prosecuting, explained the pub was busy and there was not a lot of space which meant the females had to shuffle up towards a man not known to them to get a seat at a table.

Mr Fay said the females noticed he was sitting there masturbating and then he turned to them and said: "This is for you."

The court heard one of the females took a photo of Scott before reporting the matter.

Mr Fay added: "The accused told police he had no recollection of doing that whatsoever. He was very heavily intoxicated."

Passing sentence on his return to court today (Monday), Sheriff Peter Paterson told Scott the Community Payback Order was a direct alternative to custody and must be completed within 18 months.
