A film about a Galashiels caretaker's struggles with Tourette's has been shortlisted for six prizes at this year's British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs).

As well as Best Casting and Best Original Screenplay, I Swear is also up for the Outstanding British Film award, alongside 28 Years Later - which was shot over the border in Northumberland.

Robert Aramayo, who played John Davidson in the biopic, has also been shortlisted for Best Leading Actor - alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another) - while Peter Mullan is up for Best Supporting Actor, for playing Tommy Trotter in the movie about the Tourette's campaigner.

The Game of Thrones star is also nominated for the Rising Star award which is voted for by the public. Aramayo said: "It's a huge, huge honour.

"Hopefully it will help propel more people to go and watch the film and lead to deeper conversations about Tourette's, that would be amazing."

I Swear quickly became the most watched film at John's hometown cinema in Galashiels since Merlin Cinemas took over last year, with the audience in Screen One giving it a standing ovation on its opening night.

Praising Aramayo for his performance ahead of the film's release, John revealed the actor moved to the area for a number of weeks to perfect the role.

"Rob is a method actor and wanted to be part of my day-to-day life to learn (more about the condition) and become me for the film," he told us.

"He rented accommodation in Scott Street and spent most days with me; he was looking at how I walked, how I talked, how I held myself; my mannerisms - everything about me.

"And he has smashed it, big time!

"People who have seen previews of the film have said to me: 'If you close your eyes and listen, you would think that's you ticking on the TV. The way you walk, the way you talk, the way you hold the (key) fob in your hand, and that kind of stuff' - he's got it absolutely spot on."

The 79th BAFTA film awards will be presented at the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 22nd.
