Pensioner accused of killing partner dies in jail

An 84-year-old man charged with the murder of his wife at the home they shared in Galashiels has died in jail.
John Hanson was accused of killing Margaret Maude Hanson (pictured top), also aged 84, at the property in the town's Wood Street on December 9th last year.
The pensioner made no plea during two separate court hearings in the Scottish Borders.
However, the Scottish Prison Service confirmed he died at HMP Edinburgh last Wednesday (April 9th).
A Fatal Accident Inquiry will now be held to determine the cause.
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: "Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.
"As this is subject to an ongoing investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
