A court's been hearing how a supermarket worker was left "extremely shaken" after a dog charged at him while making a delivery in Galashiels - and bit him on the GROIN.

The van driver, who was working for Sainsbury's, had called at Nicolas Wilson's home in the town's Melrose Road on October the 10th last year when the German Shepherd ran out of the house and repeatedly jumped on him.

Attempts were made to restrain the dog but, because it had no collar or lead on, it began to pull on the shop worker's jacket and was able to bite him for a second time on the groin, and another time on the hip.

When police attended to take a statement, Joanna Waller, prosecuting, said the German Shepherd could be heard barking throughout, and attempting to jump over a gate.

Wilson - described as an editor for a book publisher - admitted being the owner of a German Shepherd which was dangerously out of control when he appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

His solicitor admitted it would have been "an extremely scary" incident for the delivery driver, but pointed out his client was "extremely apologetic", and the dog is no longer walked in public.

The court heard measures had been put in place to contain the dog following a previous incident, but the delivery driver had arrived at a different time and Wilson had forgotten to shut the gate to its pen.

The court was also told Wilson's insurers had already paid compensation to the delivery driver.

Sheriff Peter Paterson deferred sentence for a year for good behaviour, but warned the dog may have to be destroyed if there is any repeat of the incident.
