A candle-lit vigil was held in Galashiels last night (Friday) to remember 380 healthcare workers killed during the Israeli blitz on Gaza.

Around 50 people attended the event - some waving the flag of Palestine; and all demanding, as one banner read, a ceasefire now.

Photographs of some of those who have lost their lives were on display, with passers-by pausing to reflect on their stories.

Addressing the demonstration, retired Hawick GP Lesley Morrison said: "I have friends, doctors and nurses who’ve worked in Gaza and spoken about how awful it is for a long time, but now it’s incomprehensible.

"For anybody working in healthcare to try and imagine what it would be like to work with no resources and very little you can do, is extremely painful."

The event, which was organised by Borders Palestine Solidarity Group, comes as Scottish Borders Council confirms it has received a complaint alleging a councillor has broken its code of conduct by sharing Tweets relating to the conflict.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “A complaint has been received and the matter has been referred to the Monitoring Officer to investigate.”
