A busy road in the Scottish Borders has been closed to traffic during the morning rush hour after a car crashed into the side of the road - sparking fears of a gas leak.

Emergency services raced to the scene at Melrose Road in Galashiels after the alarm was raised around 7.30am this morning (Monday).

Police have sealed off the area, near the former Borders College campus, while gas distribution company SGN completes work to make the area safe.

Local bus services have also been diverted.

A black Audi, with damage to its front and side, has been left parked in a side road nearby.

It's the second incident of its kind in less than a week.

The centre of Peebles was sealed off on Tuesday night last week after a vehicle left the road and appeared to collide with a building.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.30am on Monday, September 9th, police received a report of a one-vehicle crash in the Station Brae area of Galashiels. There were no injuries reported.

"The road is currently closed to allow for recovery and repair following a gas leak.”

"Service 70 will divert from Market Square, along Abbotsford road, Tweed Road, Winston road, then it will serve Hawthorn Road first, then along Woodstock Avenue, for route back to Galashiels via Tweed Road/Abbotsford Road.

"Service 51, 60 & 313 will divert along Abbotsford road, Tweed Road, and will omit Melrose road."
