There were dramatic scenes in Galashiels tonight (Saturday) as police were called to two incidents - just streets apart, and within minutes of each other.

The first call-out came from Torwoodlee Road, around 7pm.

Neighbours reported hearing a fire alarm sounding from a top-floor flat.

Three fire crews attended - from Galashiels, Selkirk and Innerleithen - along with two ambulances and a police car.

It's understood a flat was overcome with smoke from cooking, but the resident was being checked over at the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service say the fire was extinguised prior to their arrival.

A short time later, police were called out to an incident at nearby Wood Street. Two police vehicles were in attendance.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.10pm on Saturday, 8 July, 2023, officers assisted the Scottish Fire and Rescue service at a fire within a property on Torwoodlee Road, Galashiels.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious and there were no reports of any injuries.”
