A 55-year-old woman has died following a single-car crash in the Borders.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised around 3.20pm on Friday.

It happened on the B6404 road between St Boswells and Kelso.

A silver Kia Picanto was travelling east-bound when it left the road - believed to be near the double bends close to the Makerstoun turn-off.

The casualty - the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle - was rushed to Borders General Hospital, but later died.

The road was closed between the Scott's View and Smailholm turn-offs for more than six hours while the area was made safe, and the wreckage was cleared, re-opening around 10pm.

Police say enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash, and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died in this incident.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened and we are appealing to anyone who may have information that could help to get in touch.

“In particular we are asking for those driving in the area around the time of the crash to get in touch. If you have any dash-cam footage that could assist then please contact us.”

Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2533 of Friday, 19 February, 2023.
