Around 1,500 customers are believed to have been left without water in Eyemouth for much of today (Friday), after a water main burst.

The town's schools were forced to close, and tankers were drafted in to distribute supplies.

However, most properties were estimated to be back online by 4.30pm.

Scottish Water is apologising for the inconvenience.

A spokesperson for the water authority said: "We have identified a fault on our network and are in the process of arranging a repair.

"Water supplies should gradually start to restore for customers from around 1.30pm this afternoon, once the tankers are in operation and the network starts to slowly recharge."

But they added: "Some customers may experience intermittent no water or low pressure until repairs are complete."

The first sign of a fault was flagged around 5am this morning (Friday). A picture shared online showed a large puddle on the road nearby.

Local councillor James Anderson said: "No showers this morning folks. Traffic management on Toll Bridge road historically cause significant traffic problems. Please be patient with Scottish Water staff who will be working hard to repair the problem and get our water supply back on."

Berwickshire Housing Association said the town centre appeared to be largely unaffected, but Eyemouth Harbour Trust announced all its water services were out of use.

A spokesperson for Eyemouth High School said: "School will be closed today as there is no running water available for hygiene and catering.

"All young people who may already travelling by bus will be returned home by the bus companies. School will resume on Monday as normal."

The town's primary school and Early Learning centre also took the decision to shut. A spokesperson said: "Due to the water situation across the town, Eyemouth Primary and ELC will be closed today. All children should remain at home.

"Online learning will be available through Showbie and on our Website. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday morning."
