A thief who robbed a man in Eyemouth of his car and later crashed into a police vehicle after leading officers on a high-speed chase through the town has today (Monday) been jailed for 30 months.

Alexander Dow, who's originally from Fife but had moved to the Borders to stay with his mother, pled guilty to charges of driving dangerously and while disqualified in the early hours of April the 12th.

The 39-year-old also admitted driving with a wheel missing and while under the influence of a controlled drug.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court heard the car owner had returned to his vehicle following a party when he was confronted by Dow, "who brandished what he believed was a baseball bat", and ordered to hand over his wallet and keys to the car.

Police were alerted and gave chase after spotting the vehicle - which had had a puncture - around 5.40am.

It mounted the pavement, struck a fence and then made off at high speed along a footpath.
