Road safety improvements driven forward at scene of bin lorry tragedy in the Scottish Borders
Last updated 21st Aug 2024
A number of road safety improvements have been made at the scene of a bin lorry tragedy in the Scottish Borders, which claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl.
Elizabeth Bell had been waiting for a bus to school in East Gordon when she was involved in a collision with a council refuse vehicle in January, and died in hospital a week later.
As well as new signage and road markings, new pavements have also been created on both sides of the A6105.
It comes after we reported concerns that children were having to wait on the road between Earlston and Greenlaw - which has a 60mph speed limit - to await school transport.

There were no pavements at the start of the year, and some of the road signage had become worn.
It's understood Scottish Borders Council is reviewing the impact of these new measures before deciding whether or not to recommend a reduction.
Scarecrows - dressed in high-visibility jackets - were put up outside a couple of homes in the Berwickshire community in the weeks after the primary pupil died in a drive to alert passing motorists to the danger.
But they have since been removed while officials monitor the speed of the traffic.

Signs warning of tractors turning have also been installed at either entrance to East Gordon, with Scottish Borders Council saying more than £20,000 has been spent on the improvement works.
A source told us: "My understanding is that officers are currently evaluating the data over any changes in driver behaviour following the installation of additional signage, road markings, settlement signs and pavements before coming to a position re any recommendation on the limit."
Police say enquiries into Elizabeth's death are ongoing.
