Heartless vandals have destroyed a sundial in Earlston, which was commissioned by the community council to commemorate the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

It was unveiled in September by the Duke of Buccleuch, who is grieving for his wife who passed away at the weekend.

"The arrow head and tail have gone and the main shape is twisted," the community council revealed in a post on its Facebook page.

It's understood the damage was done on Sunday, when the town was busy hosting its annual rugby sevens tournament.

The culprits also urinated on the base of the sculpture during the sickening attack on The Green.

"It is very disappointing," the community council added. "The matter has been reported to police for insurance purposes but, if anyone has information, CCTV or dashcam (footage) from driving past, that would help."

Anyone who can help is urged to contact police by dialling 101.
