Two people have been taken to Borders General Hospital after being rescued from a vehicle which crashed into the Leet Water, near Swinton.

The Scottish Ambulance Service's special operations team, and two water rescue appliances were among those to respond to the incident.

The single-vehicle crash happened on the A6112 road between Duns and Swinton, around midday today (Wednesday).

The road was closed between the B6461 and B6460 while the rescue operation was carried out.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 12.38pm on Wednesday to reports of a one vehicle road traffic collision on the A6112 between Duns and Swinton.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue appliances to the area.

"Two casualties were removed from a vehicle in the water and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We received a call today to attend a road traffic collision on the A6112. We dispatched two ambulances and our special operations team to the scene. We transported two patients to Borders General Hospital.”

It comes as the Scottish Ambulance Service confirms one person was taken to hospital after a car left the road and appeared to collide with a town centre building in Peebles last night.

Part of the High Street was sealed off and bus services diverted while emergency services responded.

Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said: "We were called by the emergency services at around 9.30pm yesterday to Peebles High Street, to assist with a road traffic collision in our capacity as Scotland’s national gas emergency service.

"Our engineers quickly made the situation safe by isolating (disconnecting) a damaged gas supply."
