A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the theft of life-saving equipment worth £30,000 from a fire station in the Scottish Borders.

It follows a break-in at the base in Duns sometime between January the 9th and 10th last year.

More equipment - worth £3,500 - was stolen during a raid on the fire station in Biggar - 65 miles away - the following day (January 11th), when the building was also damaged.

It's understood all the equipment has now been recovered and returned to the stations.

Police say a report detailing the circumstances is being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Detective Inspector Alan Sharp, from Police Scotland, said: “It is deplorable that anyone would target an emergency service. The equipment taken from the fire stations is used in life saving situations.

"We are pleased that we were able to recover it and it has now been returned.

“Following enquiries the equipment has been recovered and returned to the fire stations."
