One of Scotland's oldest hunts first-footed it to Melrose this morning (Wednesday) for its traditional New Year's Day meet.

Sausage rolls and refreshments were offered up to all those who braved the weather.

While recent changes to the law make it illegal to flush out a wild animal with more than two dogs, The Duke of Buccleuch Hounds - which is nearing its 200th anniversary - today staged a simulated hunt, where the dogs, and band of mounted riders, followed the trail of an artificially-laid scent.

Chairman Alan Murray told Greatest Hits Radio: "We believe it's important to uphold traditions which are very well kept in the Borders country, and it's great to see so many people turned out despite the weather.

"The hounds here were formed in 1827 by the fifth Duke of Buccleuch and the Dukes have continued it extremely well ever since, so we look forward to 200 years shortly.

"We naturally have to abide by the regulations and rules laid down by governments. Sadly, it's not going to be a long day because we can't do it when the fog comes down."

But he added: "We're very happy to accept the invitation to come and show a countryside activity which continues, albeit in a different format."
