Tributes are being paid to the former footballer who led Berwick Rangers to one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football.

Doug Coutts was captain of the Shielfield Park side in 1967 when they beat Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Cup.

He made more than 150 appearances over three seasons and passed away, aged 83, at hospital in Southport on April 25th.

The Lowland League side has described Coutts as "a wonderful servant of the club, who was very proud to have worn the black and gold, and attended the 50th anniversary celebration of the Rangers match in January 2017."

A statement released following his death adds: "He will forever be etched into Berwick Rangers history as the captain of the team on 28th January 1967, on the occasion of our famous triumph over Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Cup."

According to www.afc.co.uk, Doug - who was born in Aberdeen - always seemed destined to make an impact in the game having captained both the Aberdeen primary and secondary school select teams.

While at Kittybrewster Primary School he had appeared alongside one of football's most iconic figures - Denis Law - and while at the Grammar School he had been capped at schoolboy level.

After Berwick, he moved to Wigan Athletic, helping them win the Northern Premier League championship in 1970-71. He was also a member of the side which gave Manchester City a huge test in the FA Cup at Maine Road losing only 1-0, before ending his football career with Altrincham in 1973.

The Wee Gers spokesperson added: "The thoughts of all at the club are with Doug's wife Jean, and his daughters Valerie and Diane."
