After a quiet start to the year, rescue teams have now been called out to the Holy Island causeway two days in a row.

We previously reported how two German tourists were heard shouting for help on Thursday after they became stranded - chest deep in water - on the road, which links the Northumberland beauty spot with the mainland.

The language barrier was blamed for them being unable to read the safe crossing times.

The pair managed to wade to safety at the refuge hut to await rescue, and later recovered their bike which had been swept away.

Now, it's emerged another rescue took place yesterday (Friday), after two people and their dog were cut off by the tide.

Coastguard teams from Berwick and the Holy Island raced to the scene, along with lifeboats from Berwick and Seahouses and a Coastguard helicopter, after the alarm was raised around 4.20pm.

They found the trio on the roof of their partially-submerged car.

A spokesperson for Berwick Coastguard said: "The officer in charge deployed Coastguard Rescue Officers into the water with our Res-Q Sled, as per the previous day.

"The casualties were rescued by the ILB from Seahouses Lifeboat Station and transferred into the Res-Q sled and brought ashore to be checked over by Coastguards."

Seahouses RNLI Volunteer Press Officer Ian Clayton added: "Unfortunately, another avoidable incident, which will probably result in the car being written off."

Anyone venturing to the Holy Island is being urged to plan ahead, and check the tide times.

"We thought the message was starting to get through, a spokesperson for the local Coastguard team said. But, they added: "Since Tuesday, we have had four causeway jobs in three days."
