A 63-year-old man who attempted to overtake a bus on the A7 when it was unsafe to do so, and collided with another car travelling in the opposite direction, has admitted a charge of dangerous driving.

It happened between Hawick and Ashkirk on April the 16th last year.

Jedburgh Sheriff Court today (Monday) heard the driver of the other vehicle was forced to take evasive action in an attempt to avoid a collision.

But Raymond Walker, from Hamilton Road in Hawick, still clipped and damaged the vehicle's wing mirror.

The incident was captured on the bus's CCTV system, with Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, adding it was "fortunate" the outcome wasn't a lot worse.

Walker's solicitor, Ed Hulme, said it was "a gross error of judgement" - pointing out his client had been driving for 12 years without incident.

The unemployed labourer has been fined a total of £370, banned from the road for 12 months, and ordered to resit an extended driving test.
