Part of Coldstream town centre was sealed off this afternoon (Thursday) after emergency services responded to reports of a suspected gas leak.

Police and fire crews were quickly on the scene, in the town's High Street, after the alarm was raised around 2pm.

The main road close to the Scotland-England border was reduced to a single lane as gas distribution company SGN examined the area.

Both a firefighter and police helped to control traffic on the A698, near the Newcastle Arms Hotel.

It's the third call-out of its kind in the Scottish Borders in just over a week.

On Monday, Melrose Road in Galashiels was closed to traffic during the morning rush hour after a car crashed into the side of the road - sparking fears of a gas leak.

Police sealed off the area, near the former Borders College campus, while SGN completes worked to make the area safe.

And, on Tuesday night last week, the centre of Peebles was sealed off after a vehicle left the road and appeared to collide with a building. One person was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson confirmed the latest incident in Coldstream was a false alarm.
