A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a woman in Chirnside.

Emergency services were called to the Berwickshire village around 4.35am on Sunday.

It was in response to a report a woman had been seriously injured at a property there.

However, the woman - also aged 31 - was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Inspector Laura White, of Police Scotland, said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

"Specialist officers are providing support to her family as our investigation continues.”

The death has shocked the small Scottish Borders community - with one saying the area had been "eerily quiet" since the incident.

Officers remain on guard at the front and back of the home in Windram Road this morning.

A lane at the side of the property, which leads to a neighbouring playpark, has also been taped off.

The man is expected to appear at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

The rear of the home - which looks onto Windram Park - was also sealed off with police tape.

Chief Inspector Stuart Fletcher, the Local Area Commander, said: “We understand this incident will cause concern within the local community and I want to reassure residents that there will be an ongoing police presence in the area.

"Additional patrols are being carried out and I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to officers.”

Police are pictured at the front and rear of the property in Windram Road.
