Hundreds of people lined the streets of Galashiels yesterday (Saturday) to witness the climax of this year's Braw Lads' Gathering.

Jamie Bell and Rebecca Grieve led this year's festivities, after being appointed to the roles of Braw Lad and Lass.

They were supported by more than 200 horses and riders on a ceremonial ride round the boundaries of the town, in one of the highlights of - at its core - a week-long series of events celebrating its history.

"Couldn't have asked for a better day," Jamie told Greatest Hits Radio, after returning the Burgh Standard unsullied and untarnished. "The number of people who turned out was just amazing.

"Coming across Gala Hill (with the flag) was pretty special, and then flying up Scott Street was just amazing. And then the dipping was the most emotional part."

The main ride ended with a two minutes silence at Galashiels war memorial, where the town stopped to remember its fallen.

The challenges facing the Borders festivals was evident only in QR codes placed around the ride route to allow people to make a donation to the event.

The free spectacle attracted visitors from near and far once again, with visitors from New Zealand among the crowd this year.

"I can't quite believe we're done all ready, " Rebecca said. "It's been gone in a flash.

"The Gathering means a lot to me, and it means a lot to a lot of people; and I just would hate for it to be something that faded out. So, it's really important that we get the young people involved to make sure we can keep doing this for many years to come."
