With over 500 competitions for horses, livestock and the arts, it's been described as a celebration of local farming.

Youngsters have been able to try their hand at potato picking at this year's Border Union Show.

The event - one of the highlights of the local farming calendar - is being held over two days at the Springwood Park showground in Kelso.

It got underway with a new Business Breakfast event sponsored by Buccleuch Estates and opened by local MP John Lamont on Friday, and will culminate with the Champion of Champions event on Saturday.

Dan Withall, Executive Director of The Border Union Agricultural Society, said: "It's a real treat for people to come back together again and see each other after a busy winter and looking forward to an autumn of rich harvest.

"I think tradition is at the heart of it. To me it's about doing things well and keeping the history of it alive, and those skills that we learn from the rural industries that we're part of.

"There's a lot going on this weekend, for kids as well as adults. We've a new entertainment ring, where we've got some stunt bikes. And that plays in tandem with the Sheep Show, which is a familiar and a favourite for many."
