It's fast becoming one of the highlights of the festive season.

And last year's event was one of the best yet.

Some do it for themselves, some do it to raise money for charity - but everyone has fun!

Organisers have confirmed the return of the annual Boxing Day dip in Berwick for 2024.

Scores of thrill-seekers are expected to descend on Spittal beach on Thursday, December 26th to take part in the now traditional event.

They'll once again be led into the North Sea by local piper Andrew Smith at 11am.

And many more are expected to line the shore to cheer them on.

Councillor Hardy, left, and Councillor Hill are big supporters of the event.

Among those lining up to dip a toe in the water are County councillors Georgina Hill (Berwick East) and Colin Hardy (Norham and Islandshire).

Both are part of TeamMNDA and are raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.Ā Ā

Councillor Hill said: ā€œEverything is all set for the Boxing Day dip which is always a great, fun and bracing occasion!Ā Ā

"Some swim in aid of a range of excellent charities, and there are those who choose to jump into the cold North Sea just for fun, and to sweep away the cobwebs from the day before!Ā Ā

"We are grateful to Spittal Bowling Club, who will open again this year to provide warmth and refreshments.Ā Also to Andrew Smith, who will be piping us into the sea."

Explaining why they do it, Councillor Hardy said: ā€œOver the past few years we have raised more than Ā£23,000 for MND by taking part in the Boxing Day Dip."

And he added: "All money raised is used to support people living with or affected by MND in Northumberland.ā€
