A summer of festivities got underway with the annual Riding of the Bounds in Berwick today (Saturday).

19-year-old Millie Hope is flying the flag for the Northumberland town this year, after being appointed to the role of Chief Marshal.

She was supported by Right Hand Laura Hunter, Left Hand Caitlin Grant, and Mascot Georgie Duffy.

And crowds of well-wishers lined the streets to show their support.

Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio before setting off from Berwick Barracks, Millie said: "It means the world to me.

"I've been riding the bounds since I was nine, and I'm 20 this year, so I'm really excited.

"It's a dream come true for me to be up here today, carrying the flag."

Representatives from festivals on both sides of the Scotland-England border joined the cavalcade on the 15-mile ride around the boundaries of the town, along with members of the military.

Traffic on the A1 was halted for a short time to allow riders to cross.

Praising the turnout, Northumberland County Council chairman John Beynon said: "This is fantastic, obviously got a beautiful day for it as well.

"To see traditions like this continuing is great. We had this in Morpeth and I know they're struggling to keep that going through costs etc."

He added: "The last time I was up here was the opening of the old bridge after the repairs and we're always made very welcome."
