A woman in her 40s has died after the car she was a passenger in crashed on the A1 at Berwick last night (Wednesday).

The driver - a man in his 40s - was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

It's understood they were travelling south in a black Peugeot 407 Coupe when - for reasons yet to be established - their vehicle left the road at the Morrisons roundabout.

The car ended up on an embankment, near to the junction with the A1167 North Road.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised, around 8.40pm.

But the passenger could not be saved.

Police say the man and woman’s next of kin have been informed and have been offered support by officers.

A section of the A1 was closed between Berwick and Eyemouth for several hours, while the wreckage was cleared, but has since been re-opened to traffic.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.

Sergeant Steve Chappell, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a devastating incident where a woman has sadly lost her life – and a man has been critically injured.

“Our thoughts remain with their loved ones, and we’ll continue to offer them support at this difficult time.

“Our investigation is well underway, and we’re now appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to come forward.

“We know this is a busy stretch of road between Northumberland and the Scottish border, so we’d urge any further witnesses to reach out as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information or footage should get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.

Those unable to make contact in these ways can call 101, quoting reference number: NP-20260128-1005.
