Pet bird dies following early-morning house fire

A pet bird has died following an early-morning house fire in Berwick.
Firefighters from both sides of the border rushed to the scene in the town's Highfields area after the alarm was raised around 6.40am today (Friday).
Crews from Duns and Eyemouth were among those to respond, as pictures emerged of flames engulfing the ground floor of the St Andrew's Road home - with the smoke visible for miles around.
Three ambulance vehicles were also seen in attendance, but it's understood there have been no further injuries.

Commenting on the local community noticeboard, one poster said: "We lost a pet, but my dad's fine; he’s getting checked over."
She told Greatest Hits Radio: "We don't know what caused it, hopefully we'll know soon."
Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service asked the public to stay away from the area while the scene was made safe, but crews have since returned to their stations.
A spokesperson said: "The case was closed at 12.10pm and fire investigation have conducted their work. The case was handed over to Bernicia Homes at Berwick."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We received a call at 6.48am this morning (Friday) to reports of a fire at a private address on St Andrew's Road in Berwick-upon-Tweed. We dispatched an ambulance crew, who treated and discharged one patient on-scene."
