There's shock in Berwick after a man found with life-threatening injuries near the town's police station later died.

Officers are carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area to establish exactly what happened.

But Northumbria Police don't believe anyone else was involved, and say there is no wider threat to the public.

Emergency services swooped on Church Street shortly after 4pm on Tuesday.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics the man - in his 40s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speaking at a meet and greet event in the town today (Wednesday), former Berwick Mayor, Councillor Mike Greener, told Greatest Hits Radio: "I think everybody's quite upset that this has happened, it's not something that happens very often.

"It happened during working hours, which is a big shock for that time of day as well."

Councillor Catherine Seymour, who represents the town on Northumberland County Council, added: "I was very sad to hear of the tragic news. My thoughts and prayers are with all family members."
