Pupils at Berwick Academy are being given the day off - after a burst pipe left the school without water.

Emergency support is being drafted in to resolve the issue.

And staff say they hope to reopen as soon as possible.

An email sent to parents says: "We do not take decisions like this unless they are absolutely necessary, and we thank you for your patience and support.

"Our staff are working hard alongside emergency support from utility companies to rectify the problem as quickly as possible, and we hope to be able to open as normal on Thursday."

A further update is expected to be issued on Wednesday.

Reacting to the announcement, one Northumberland local said: "School is falling to bits; money is there for a new one and not a spade in the ground."

Another added: "Yeah, kids buzzing lol."

Berwick Academy is due to receive millions of pounds worth of investment as part of a shake-up of schools in the area.

Under the proposals, 11 first schools will become primary schools from September 2025, while Berwick Middle School, Tweedmouth Community and Glendale Middle School will close from August 31st, 2026. Berwick Academy will see its age range change from 13-18 to 11-18.
