Man, 85, found dead on rural road in the Borders
Last updated 23rd Feb 2024
An 85-year-old man has been found dead on a rural road in the Borders.
There were dramatic scenes yesterday (Thursday) as police locked down the area, just outside the main village of St Boswells.
Kirk Road, which leads to Benrig Cemetery, is popular with walkers making their way to and from the River Tweed.
Police say they were made aware of the sudden death of the pensioner shortly before 3pm, and the road remained closed for several hours while officers examined the scene.
Locals report ambulance crews battled in vain to save him.
But, after sealing off the narrow route, police have today (Friday) revealed there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances around the man's death.
The scenes have shocked the normally peaceful community, with one eyewitness describing it as "a major police operation".
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.50pm on Thursday (February 22nd), police were made aware of the sudden death of an 85-year-old man on Kirk Road, St Boswells, Melrose.
“There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
