Plans to open a new £13 million garden centre in Alnwick could create 150 full and part-time jobs.

Northumberland Estates has revealed plans to build a 8,130 square metre store, with 618 parking spaces, on land at Cawledge, to the east of the A1.

Local residents are being invited to have their say on the proposals ahead of a formal planning application being submitted.

If approved, Blue Diamond - which runs 44 garden centres throughout the UK and the Channel Islands - would operate the site, which it's claimed "will further enhance Alnwick’s reputation as a destination for retail, leisure, food and hospitality".

Colin Barnes, the director of planning and development for Northumberland Estates, said: "Our ambition is to have the best garden centre in the North East based here in Alnwick and we are delighted that Blue Diamond has selected the town as the location.

"We look forward to working with them to deliver the development which will bring a range of benefits to the town.”
