Centre of Peebles sealed off due to 'police incident'
Last updated 4th Sep 2024
The centre of Peebles was sealed off tonight (Tuesday) after a car left the road and appeared to collide with a building.
It had sparked fears the local gas network may have been damaged.
Emergency services raced to the scene, in the town's High Street, after the alarm was raised just before 9pm tonight (Tuesday).
Two fire crews from Peebles and two ambulances were among those to respond.
The A72 was closed both ways - between the A703 Edinburgh Road and Tweed Bridge.
And local bus services were diverted.

The road has since reopened, although an area outside House of Gaia remained sealed off while the red Vauxhall Corsa - which was badly damaged - was recovered around 11.30pm.
Waseem Hanif, spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN, said: "We were called by the emergency services at around 9.30pm yesterday to Peebles High Street, to assist with a road traffic collision in our capacity as Scotland’s national gas emergency service.
"Our engineers quickly made the situation safe by isolating (disconnecting) a damaged gas supply."
The ambulance service also attended the incident.
A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 8.55pm on Tuesday to attend a road traffic collision in Peebles. We dispatched two ambulances to the scene with our first resource arriving within four minutes. We transported one patient to hospital.”
