A woman's had a lucky escape after her car left the road, smashed through a fence and careered down a slope - before coming to a halt on the edge of the neighbouring river.

The Vauxhall had been travelling on the A7 through Stow when the driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle.

It's unclear what caused the incident - which happened around 3.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

But police say officers attended and a woman was taken to Borders General Hospital to be checked over.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also attended to reports of a car down an embankment, which remained sealed off with police tape on Friday.

A spokesperson said: “Operations Control mobilised two appliances where crews helped to make the area safe.

“One person was removed from the car prior to the arrival of firefighters.

“Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
