A 75-year-old man has died and a 52-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a two-car crash on the A7 north of Hawick.
Emergency services - including police, fire and ambulance crews - raced to the scene on the cross-border route after the alarm was raised around 4.35pm on Sunday.
The collision, involving a black Suzuki Ignis and a red Vauxhall Grandland, took place near the junction with the Drove Road, which overlooks the site of Center Parcs proposed new 700-lodge holiday village development.
The driver of the Ignis was pronounced dead at the scene; while the driver of the Grandland was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment. Hospital staff describe her condition as serious but stable.
The road was closed for more than seven hours while police examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared, before reopening this morning around 12.15am.
