Woman, 64, dies and three injured following A7 crash

A 64-year-old woman has died and a 71-year-old woman is in a "critical" condition in hospital following a crash involving three vehicles on the A7 near Ashkirk.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised around 3.45pm yesterday (Tuesday).

The woman, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra, was rushed to Borders General Hospital, but later died.

Her passenger, a man aged 65, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. 

A 71-year-old woman, who was driving a Nissan Juke, was airlifted to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where her condition has been described as "critical but stable". 

A 30-year-old man driving a Ford Ranger pick-up suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The road between Hawick and Selkirk was closed for around 12 hours while police examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.

And officers have today issued an appeal for information.

Inspector James Henry, from Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of this crash, I would ask any road users who were on the A7 near Ashkirk who may have seen any of the vehicles or the crash to contact us with any information they may have.

"If anyone has dash cam equipment and was in the area, please check you footage for any images which could assist us in our investigation.”
