Ongoing bridge works lead to further disruption on A68 south of Earlston
Last updated 14th Nov 2024
Motorists are being warned of disruption ahead as work continues to refurbish and replace the bearings of the bridge that carries the A68 over Leader Water.
Four overnight closures are planned over the coming weeks.
It will see the cross-border route shut between 8pm and 6am on Saturdays, November 16th and 30th, as well as Monday and Tuesday, December 9th and 10th.
A 25-mile diversion will be in place between Earlston and St Boswells, via the A6105, A6089 and A699.
The alternative route through Gordon and Kelso is estimated to add 32 minutes to affected journeys.

Dave Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “It is necessary for safety that we close Earlston Bridge overnight while these works are carried out.
“If you need to use the A68 on these nights, our advice is to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time for your journey.
“Some additional overnight road closures will be required over the remainder of the project. Details will be published as soon as dates are confirmed.
“We’re grateful to road users and local communities for their patience and understanding.”
The project to refurbish the bridge over Leader Water is programmed to continue until February 2025.
Meanwhile, a further 12 overnight closures are planned on the A68 near Ravenswood roundabout and Carfraemill for carriageway improvements from November 25th.
Elsewhere, BEAR Scotland has announced there will be no weekend working taking place on the A1 at Reston on November 16th and 17th as planned.
The works will now take place on Thursday and Friday, November 21st and 22nd instead.
And, the A1 south will close overnight at Burnmouth for resurfacing works on November 22nd. A nine-mile diversion will be in place between Ayton and Berwick, between 7.30pm and 6am.
